Join our Emergency Department Team

We are seeking motivated and passionate Paediatric Emergency Registrars to join our team and continue their training within the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN).

Our Paediatric ED at the Flinders Medical Centre in SALHN is overseen by dedicated and enthusiastic Paediatric Emergency Medicine consultants with both Emergency Medicine and Paediatric specialisation, and we are seeking paediatric trainees, ACEM trainees or advanced General Practice trainees for 3, 6 or 12 month terms in our PED. There is also the opportunity to combine PED term or terms with rotations to the general ED or elsewhere within SALHN to meet applicants’ training requirements. Part time positions and flexible rostering are available.

About the role:

The Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) Paediatric Emergency Department sees around 20,000 paediatric presentations each year and is an integrated service within one of the busiest tertiary mixed Emergency Departments in Australia. The FMC ED as a whole sees a total of 84,000 presentations each year and is both a designated state trauma centre as well as the obstetric trauma centre for South Australia.
The FMC PED is accredited by the ACEM and RACP for 12 months of training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine for general trainees, and 18 months training for enrolled PEM trainees. We are supported on-site by accredited Paediatric and Neonatal units, as well as a wide range of surgical specialities. On-site Critical Care support is provided by an adult Intensive Care service, as well as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Our Paediatric inpatient service also encompasses the state-wide Paediatric Eating Disorders Unit and oversees one of the two Child Protection Units in South Australia.

We provide a great opportunity for PEM, ACEM and RACP trainees to acquire solid paediatric emergency experience and teaching in a friendly and supportive environment. The unique needs of individual trainees are also acknowledged, with trainees able to access either education programs of our PED or general ED (minimum 4 hours of protected paid teaching per week) as well as other educational opportunities. There are also opportunities to be involved in various quality improvement activities.
In May 2021 the FMC PED moved into new state-of-the-art facilities, reinforcing our goal to provide continued excellence in paediatric emergency care.

What else is on offer?

Pay and conditions are in line with the current SA Medical Officers Enterprise Bargaining Agreement. The full contract offered to successful candidates will be of 3 years’ duration, giving the trainee flexibility to continue beyond their PED term in our mixed adult/paediatric ED should this suit their training plans.

Other benefits include:

  • 5 weeks of annual leave
  • 8 hours of paid protected teaching time per fortnight
  • 1-2 weeks of professional development leave and/or examination leave
  • Professional development allowance of up to $10,000 per annum
  • Salary sacrifice options to increase your take-home pay

Who can apply?

TS1-TS4 ACEM trainees, Paediatric trainees (Basic/Advanced) or equivalent in an alternative training program (e.g. FRACGP, ACRRM or International Paediatric or Emergency Medicine training programs).
International applicants - PGY 3 + medical practitioners who are eligible to be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) – must have AMC 2 (clinical exam) or be eligible for provisional registration via the competent authority pathway.

As per the SMOEA 2022, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 12-month allocation as Advanced Trainee will be determined in line with your training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills, and capabilities.
