As per the SMOEA 2025, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 6-months allocation to Advanced Trainee/Fellow Paediatric Palliative Care will be determined in line with your training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills, and capabilities.

About the role

The Palliative Fellow provides inpatient, outpatient and community-based paediatric palliative care within WCHN under Consultant supervision. Working within the Department of Paediatric Palliative Care, the role delivers interdisciplinary assessment and management for children and families across hospital, home and community settings. The Fellow contributes to goal-directed, evidence-based care focused on quality of life and participates in a formal RACP training program, including a significant research component.

Key duties of the role

  • Provide inpatient care including assessment, care coordination, daily management, discharge planning and follow-up.
  • Participate in outpatient clinics, shared consultations and ongoing management with primary clinicians and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Deliver community and home-based care in collaboration with hospital and community services under supervision.
  • Support goal-of-care discussions and development of anticipatory, family-centred care plans focused on quality of life.
  • Participate in procedures, investigations, interpretation of results and multidisciplinary meetings under Consultant supervision.

Skills and Experience

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) registrable with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Completion of RACP Basic Paediatric Training and eligible Advanced Trainee status.
  • Clinical experience in paediatric medicine with exposure to complex and/or palliative care presentations.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills in multidisciplinary and family-centred environments.
  • Ability to work under supervision, adapt to changing clinical demands, and progress FRACP training requirements.
