We are looking for a Fellow to join our General & Gastrointestinal Surgery Unit! 

The General and GI Surgery Unit covers all General Surgery cases and has a subspecialty interest in Major Complex Ventral Hernia cases, Colorectal, emergency surgery and Laparoscopic work.

You will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of CPI principles during your term at Flinders Medical Centre. You will participate in CPI projects where required and ensure the accurate data entry into the Unit audit, including presentation of all deaths. 

About the role: 

Reporting to the Head of Unit, General & Gastrointestinal Unit, some of your duties as the Fellow may involve: 

  • The opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of elective and emergency surgical cases. 
  • The opportunity to participate in the endoscopy/colonoscopy unit at Noarlunga Hospital or Flinders Medical Centre. 
  • Manage ward inpatients together with supervision of junior staff and attend outpatient clinics.
  • Participate in clinical research activities within the unit as a co-investigator in sponsored trials to initiate own clinical project during appointment.

The Unit is on call approximately 1 in 4 days, and the successful applicant could expect to be on call 4 times in a 2-week period in a second-on-call capacity. As the second on call, you would be expected to manage the inpatient consultation service, referrals being seen according to the degree of urgency but within a maximum of 24 hours.

About you:

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent degree registerable with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority (AHPRA).    
  • FRACS (equivalent) is an essential requirement for the successful applicants.
    • For those from overseas, or locals without the FRACS, they will not meet minimum requirements for the role.
  • Clinical experience and competence in the practice of surgery as expected for level of training. 
  • Research experience and publication in peer-reviewed journals. 
  • Ability to liaise with the Colorectal, Oesophagogastric and Hepatopancreatobiliary Unit to both refer and accept patients as appropriate for their ongoing clinical management.
  • GESA (Gastroenterological Society of Australia) or equivalent.
