About the role

The Medical Consultant delivers evidence-based forensic medical services for people aged 16 years or older affected by sexual assault or interpersonal violence. The Medical Consultant conducts medico-legal examinations, prepares expert reports, ensures legal compliance, provides follow-up care, and collaborates with police and service providers for integrated, empathetic support.

Key duties of the role

  • Provide an effective and efficient medical and forensic service as part of an integrated response to victims of sexual assault.
  • Conduct forensic medical examinations ensuring statutory and legal obligations are satisfied.
  • Provide timely and comprehensive medico-legal reports in relation to sexual assault victims examined.
  • Support the provision of service to victims of interpersonal violence.
  • Undertake post graduate training in forensic medicine.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent.
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Medical Practitioner with Specialist Registration in a field which is clinically relevant to the provision of forensic medical care following sexual assault e.g., clinical forensic medicine, general practice, gynaecology or emergency medicine.
  • Recognised as a consultant under the SA Medical Officer’s Award
  • 4 years of clinical experience in a field of medicine relevant to the provision of medical care following sexual assault.
  • Experience in women’s health and in the performance of anogenital examinations.
  • Provision of trauma-informed culturally appropriate forensic medical services.
  • Ability to relate easily and comfortably with people in crisis.
