About the role

The Clinical Midwife leads clinical teaching, staff orientation, and professional development to foster a learning culture. The Clinical Midwife supports the Nurse/Midwife Unit Manager and Nurse/Midwife Educators, coordinates multidisciplinary services, addresses care delivery issues, and contributes to organisation-wide projects and education initiatives.

Key duties of the role

  • Participate in clinical teaching and oversee the learning experience for students, new staff, and staff with less experience.
  • Provide orientation to new and rotating staff.
  • Act to resolve local and/or immediate nursing/midwifery care or service delivery problems.
  • Ensure that education programs are relevant and current.
  • Assist and support the Nurse/Midwife Unit Manager in clinical and education activities.

Skills and Experience

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse/Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds, or who is eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate.
  • Additional tertiary or vocational qualifications in education.
  • Registered Nurse/Midwife with at least 3 years, full time equivalent, post registration experience.
  • Experience in the leadership and direction of student midwives and less experienced registered midwives.
  • Competence in supervision of homebirth and newborn examination.
