About the role

The Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Clinician provides cultural expertise and clinical care to support the mental health and wellbeing of Aboriginal children, youth, and families in the Youth Justice System. The Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Clinician leads culturally informed interventions, collaboration, and staff education to ensure safe, effective, and recovery-focused services.

Key duties of the role

Allied Health Professional (AHP2):

  • Establish relationships to enable contact with Aboriginal children and young people (and their families) experiencing social and emotional difficulties or mental health distress.
  • Provide culturally informed referrals, assessments, interventions, and case plans.
  • Contribute to the development of culturally and clinically informed assessment, intervention, and programs for Aboriginal children, young people and their families.
  • Participate in the identification of social and emotional and mental health needs of Aboriginal children, young people and their families.
  • Present at and contribute to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) team reviews.

Registered Nurse/Midwife (RN/M2C):

  • Provide a high standard of advanced clinical mental health nursing practice.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and coordinate care and appropriate service delivery options.
  • Provide health education, physical health monitoring, therapeutic interventions, counselling, and rehabilitation programs to improve mental health outcomes.
  • Participate in the review of incidents, accidents, and complaints arising within the clinical setting.
  • Participate in and oversee the provision of quality mental health nursing care in a forensic setting.

Skills and Experience

Allied Health Professional (AHP2):

  • Appropriate Degree or equivalent qualification which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers, or
  • Appropriate Degree or specific qualification as recognised by the Psychology Board of Australia. Must hold general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia and be endorsed for clinical practice, or
  • Appropriate degree or equivalent qualification which entitles registration as an Occupational Therapist with the Occupational Therapy Board of SA (up to July 2012) or Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (post July 2012).
  • Clinical experience in the treatment and management of complex child and adolescent mental health issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging, establishing relationships, having informed discussions with Aboriginal children and young people.

Registered Nurse/Midwife (RN/M2C):

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a nurse by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds, or is eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate. Must be enrolled in an approved mental health course or hold a qualification in mental health practice.
  • Registered Nurse with at least 3 years, full time equivalent, post registration experience
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging, establishing relationships, having informed discussions with Aboriginal children and young people.
  • Clinical experience in providing assessment and interventions for Aboriginal children, young people and their families experiencing complex mental health / social and emotional wellbeing difficulties.
  • Demonstrate ability to integrate Aboriginal cultural experiences, philosophy and practice particularly as it relates to the provision of social and emotional/mental health services.
