About the Role

As a Medical Scientist – Anatomical Pathology, you will play a key role in delivering an efficient and high-quality service across the Anatomical Pathology departments at Frome and the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Providing an essential scientific resource to the discipline, you will perform routine and complex diagnostic testing while applying your expertise to analyse, interpret and troubleshoot standard laboratory procedures. Your work will include the examination and dissection of simple and non-complex specimens in accordance with NPAAC guidelines, embedding, sectioning and staining tissue, performing immunohistochemistry and frozen sections, and contributing to accurate and timely histopathological diagnosis within established KPIs.

This is a dynamic role where you will contribute to quality assurance, NATA accreditation activities, research and clinical trials, while supporting innovation through the evaluation and implementation of new reagents, techniques and equipment. You will liaise closely with pathologists, technical and scientific staff, providing expert advice and assisting with supervision, workflow optimisation and training programs. With a strong focus on safety, compliance and continuous improvement, you will help maintain equipment, manage consumables, participate in protocol reviews and ensure effective use of resources — all while contributing to education, collaboration and excellence in patient-centred diagnostic services.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will meet the essential minimum requirements as defined by the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC), holding an appropriate AQF Level 7 qualification (or recognised equivalent) that meets accreditation standards for Medical Scientists in pathology laboratories. You bring advanced technical capability in Anatomical Pathology, strong scientific judgement and a commitment to quality, safety and collaborative practice.

  • Qualified & Accredited Professional – AQF Level 7 degree (or equivalent as recognised by AIMS/NPAAC) with eligibility to practise as a Medical Scientist in a NATA-accredited laboratory.

  • Advanced Technical Expertise – Demonstrated experience in histopathology including embedding, sectioning, specialised staining, frozen sections and immunohistochemistry, with the ability to gross Category A (simple) and Category B (non-complex) specimens.

  • Collaborative Clinical Contributor – Proven ability to work effectively with pathologists and multidisciplinary teams, supervise and motivate staff, and perform accurately under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Quality & Governance Focused – Strong knowledge of histotechnology, human anatomy, relevant legislation (including Transplantation and Anatomy, Coroners and Death Certification Acts), and familiarity with ISO 9001, TGA Biologicals Framework, NATA accreditation and NPAAC guidelines.
