About the role: 

Reporting to the (Operationally) - Head of Unit, Division of General Medicine (Professionally) - Staff Specialist, General and Acute Medicine, some of your duties for the role will include:

  • Provide senior medical input for deteriorating patients, including support for MET calls in collaboration with ICU
  • Leadership role to the TMOs (RMOs and Interns) guiding them with management, escalation and de-escalation where appropriate for acutely deteriorating pts after hrs.
  • Acting as an accessible, supportive senior medical resource for junior doctor’s after-hours with good communication and skills of managing complex scenarios
  • Contributing to the education and development of medical staff through bedside teaching and case discussions
  • Providing real-time supervision, guidance, and decision support to interns, RMOs, and registrars
  • Supporting safe patient flow, including admissions, discharges, and transfers where clinically appropriate

About you:

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent, registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner with General Registration
  • Demonstrated experience as a senior clinician in a hospital setting, preferably in acute general medicine or a comparable and equivalent clinical experience role in a tertiary centre (at least 3 years of working in acute medical settings in large hospitals) 
  • Communicates effectively with colleagues, nursing, allied health, and other professional staff. Ensures clear handover, guidance, and coordination of patient care across multidisciplinary teams
  • Comprehensive knowledge of acute medicine skills and knowledge across multiple specialties, including medicine, surgery, and mental health
  • Experience participating in MET or rapid response teams, or managing deteriorating patients in a hospital setting, is desirable

‘As per the SMOEA 2022, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 12-month allocation as Advanced Trainee will be determined in line with your training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills, and capabilities.’

This is a single vacancy, with three possible appointment classifications. The successful applicants will be appointed in the position appropriate to their skills, qualifications, and experience.
