About the role: 

Reporting to the Head of Unit, this role is responsible for promoting the health and wellbeing of persons undertaking Mental Health rehabilitation by providing responsive primary health care services, programs and activities which are based on social justice and harm minimisation principles. The GP Consultant will work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. As a GP Consultant, the incumbent will contribute to the provision of safe, best practice medical primary healthcare services to patients of Mental Health Rehabilitation Services (MHRS). 

Duties for the role will include:

  • Providing specialist clinical health assessment, case management, client centred care, health education and advocacy to patients in a clinic or community setting
  • Ensuring the appropriate documentation of clinical care in patients' medical records and ensuring the timely provision of discharge summaries, written specialist opinions and requested medical reports,
  • Applying and sharing expert clinical knowledge to improve patient/client care,
  • Integrating contemporary information and evidence with personal experience to support the decision making, innovative thinking and objective analysis at this level,
  • Contributing specific expertise to medical practice through clinical guidelines and standards development,
  • Providing strong leadership within clinical intervention and research, fostering an environment that inspires staff to undertake professional development and research

About you:

  • Fellow of the RACGP or ACRRM,
  • Appropriate Specialist Qualifications and registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner with Specialist registration,
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, support change and engage a broad range of stakeholders and to foster a spirit of cooperation and collegiality with clinicians at a wide range of levels,
  • An ability to develop a range of partnerships, networks and relationships with key stakeholders both within and external to the organisation,
  • Proven ability to generate creative and original solutions/interventions to complex clinical problems and ability to initiate, lead and manage complex changing environment,
  • Demonstrated ability to provide a high standard of clinical practice in the area of hospital avoidance and supported discharge,
  • Experience in management of drug and alcohol issues,
  • Experience in the management of mental health issues.
