About the role

The Peer Specialist - Utilises lived experience of mental health recovery to support young people and families in the inpatient children and young people mental health ward. The position involves planning and delivering educational groups focused on recovery and self-management, serving as a positive role model, and sharing practical strategies gained through personal recovery journeys.

Key duties of the role 

  • Educate consumers about recovery from mental illness and highlight which behaviours have facilitated recovery and which have interfered with recovery
  • Plan, present and evaluate educational groups for consumers in conjunction with other staff.
  • Research and evaluate lived experience information from which to develop reports and recommendations to management.
  • Assist with the communication flow between the consumer, carer and the treating team.
  • Represent the point of view of a consumer in regard to planning within the service.

Skills and Experience

  • Lived experience of mental illness and recovery as a young person under 18 years
  • Previous experience as a Peer Specialist or equivalent with children and adolescents
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to present information clearly
  • Knowledge of Peer Work's Recovery Framework and child/adolescent mental health
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and accept supervision
