About the role: 

Reporting to the Head of Unit Ophthalmology, some of your duties for the role will include:

  • Attendance at 3 monthly EBSA Quality Review Committee meetings, as support for Microbiology-related matters
  • Management and preparation of ocular specimens for microbiological testing with communication of results to medical staff in a timely manner
  • Provide guidance and expertise in collecting, processing and testing of small ocular samples for infectious agents, in samples with potentially low pathogen load
  • Attendance and presentation at Microbiology, Ophthalmology and Eye Bank Academic meetings as required
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of sterile / aseptic techniques utilised during donor procurement and tissue preparation and provide advice in relation to EBSA processes and protocols where necessary
  • Due to the specialised nature of the role, it is anticipated that a successful candidate will be provided with additional training and supervision as necessary to acquire the appropriate skill set in Ocular Microbiology to be successful in the role

About you:

  • Demonstrated experience in advanced molecular diagnostic testing for corneal and other ocular infectious agents
  • Higher degree or extensive work experience in Microbiology, or related discipline, BSc Microbiology, Biology or related scientific field
  • Track record of practice in Hospital, Academic or Laboratory based Microbiological Testing and Diagnosis
  • High level communications skills and ability to network effectively with Department and EBSA staff and with SA Pathology and hospital services externally
