Emergency Medicine Special Skills Registrar Positions (Simulation/Ultrasound/Paediatrics/Medical Administration)
ACEM Training Year 2026 (start date Feb 2 2026)

We are seeking motivated and passionate Emergency Medicine trainees to join our team and continue their training within the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) in a range of unique Special Skills Positions based at Flinders Medical Centre.

Please note:As per the SMOEA 2022, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 12-month allocation as Registrar will be determined in line with your training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills and capabilities.

 

Simulation/Medical Education:

We are looking for a post Primary exam trainee in Emergency Medicine with a keen interest in simulation and medical education to undertake a 12 month position as our ACEM accredited Special Skills Registrar in Simulation/Medical Education (6 months accredited term in special skills and is a TS4 accredited term). The successful applicant will work 0.5 FTE as an Emergency Medicine Registrar and 0.5 FTE in a dedicated educational position. 

The successful applicant will:

  • Assist in preparing and facilitating the various medical education programmes at all levels (medical student, RMO, Registrar, ACEM exam preparation).
  • Build on the in-situ high fidelity simulation program within the Emergency Department which involves planning, execution, and debriefing components
  • Deliver high quality multidisciplinary medical education in the Clinical Simulation Lab at Flinders University, including education and assessment of Flinders Medical Students.
  • Be a key stakeholder in the governance and planning within the inter-departmental hospital simulation group
  • Undertake at least one project to improve education/simulation quality within the Emergency Department.

 

Ultrasound:

Working in a full-time position, we are offering the opportunity to work 0.5 FTE as a senior Emergency Registrar in the ED, as well as 0.5 FTE in a dedicated Ultrasound role. This is a unique opportunity for the successful applicant to complete the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound (CCPU) modules over the course of the 12-month position. The modules offered are EFAST, AAA, FELS, Biliary, Lung, Renal, and Proximal DVT. The successful applicant will be expected to complete ASUM-accredited courses for the CCPU modules above prior to commencement of the role.

The successful applicant will:

  • Undertake scans in the ED with a FACEM and/or sonographer educator in ED (SEED).
  • Receive, 1-on-1 sonographer supervision in the ultrasound department, contributing to the bedside diagnosis and management of patients in ED.
  • Be involved in teaching, quality assurance processes, and research activities in EM POCUS.

 

Paediatric Emergency/Paediatric Medicine: 

Our accredited Paediatric Medical Unit oversees over 3000 admissions each year, encompasses the state-wide Paediatric Eating Disorders Unit, and oversees one of the two Child Protection Units in South Australia. This is a unique opportunity for PEM, ACEM and RACP Advanced Trainees to undertake a combined Paediatric Emergency and Paediatric Medicine year, with 6 months in each unit.

During their  6 months in the Paediatric ED, the successful applicants will:

  • Experience both sides of the Paediatric Emergency/Inpatient interface, gaining comprehensive paediatric medical and acute care experience.
  • Have generous non-clinical time for involvement in teaching, quality improvement activities and professional/clinical development.

There are up to 2 positions available with Paediatric Emergency/Paediatric Medicine. 

 

Who Can Apply?

The full contract offered to successful candidates will be of 3 years' duration, giving the trainee the flexibility to continue beyond their 1-year dedicated Special Skills Post in our mixed  adult/paediatric ED should this suit their training plans. 

  • Simulation/Medical Education Special Skills Placement: TS2-TS4 ACEM trainees.
  • Ultrasound Special Skills Placement: TS2-TS4 ACEM trainees. ACEM Training Stage 4 (TS4) applicants are required to be proficient in EFAST, AAA, and US-guided IV access prior to commencement of the role, as you will need to teach these skills to fulfil TS4 requirements.
  • Paediatric Emergency / Paediatric Medicine Special Training Position: TS2-TS4 ACEM trainees and Paediatric trainees (Basic/Advanced).
